Northwest Illinois Was Made for Bikes

Touring Northwest Illinois by bike is one of the best experiences you’ll ever encounter on the open road. The surrounding landscapes of Illinois are a bikers dream. The smooth cement roads that bend and twist through plush, rolling plains and hilly vistas are some of the most beautiful scenery the country has to offer bikers.

The quiet roads of Illinois are quickly becoming a rider’s paradise. Next time you want a scenic ride through the towering pine, head on over to Illinois. You’ll enjoy some of the greatest routes this state has to offer!

Rt. 64: Mt. Morris to Savanna

Route 64 has long stretches of open straight highway that give you a chance to really open your bike up. Following the highway out of Mt. Morris and you’ll reach the town of Mt. Carroll. Here you’ll want to take a break to visit one of the most incredible haunted houses in America, Raven’s Grin. You should spend a little time looking around Mt. Carroll at the cobblestone streets, downtown, eateries, and the different variety of shops.

Continuing down Rt. 64 out of Mt. Carroll, you’ll ride along the Mississippi heading towards Savanna. According to other bikers, this stretch of Rt. 64 is one of their favorite roads to ride. The little town of Savanna is located along the Mississippi River and has been called Illinois' biggest biker destination because the town has it all. When you’re in Savanna, make sure you stop at Poopy’s - it has it all. From a “Pub n’ Grill” to “Tattoos n’ Piercing,” you’re sure to find something you like.

If you plan on spending any time in Savanna you’ll need a place to stay. Right outside Poopy’s you can pitch your tent for free. Otherwise, you can head over to Mississippi Palisades State Park and enjoy one of the top camping sites in the area. The park is home to beautiful hiking trails and huge campsites.

There are many other great routes in Illinois that are sure to please any biker.

  1. Illinois Rt. 2 runs between Dixon and Rockford and is one of the best routes the state has to offer.
  2. Lowell Park Road will wind you through green pastures, cattle, and farmers cultivating their crops on the horizon.
  3. The Blackhawk Waterways Convention & Visitors Bureau will help you find other magnificent routes to explore in Illinois.

Vote # 17 - I would love to take a trip to Savanna and eat at Paula Dean's Restaurant. Isn't that where Paula Dean's restaurant is located?
