During recent years, Vintage motorcycles have make their comeback and there is a great fad of Vintage motorcycles among bike enthusiasts. Billy Lane of Choppers Inc. along with his enthusiastic friends has planned an unique event of recreating antique motorcycle with new features and modern forks, frames, gear and wheels. This events are inspired from the twentieth century boardtrack racers which will take place at New Smyrna Speedway on the asphalt track which is a very popular track for winged cars, go-karts and four-wheeled racing. The bikes that will be ridden during this event are built from vintage powertrains and racing chassis which are inspired from V-twin models of 1925.
This year Daytona Bike event will mark its 75th anniversary and can be considered as highly popular motorcycle rallies in the world. The event will also include vintage-themed bikes with American V-twins that were used during board track racing more than a century ago. This event will also include many heat races and the winners will advance to the final race.
The highlight of this event 20 custom-built bikes by many dealers and custom builders across the globe along with great personalities such as Flying Merkel, Thor and Mack. All the bikes that will be featured in the event dates back between 1911 and 1920 which is truly amazing.
During 20th century, bike races were held on the same track where bicycle races were held, as a result the surface of the tracks were subject to creating hazards and splitting for the bike riders. It was possible for the board track motorcycles to reach on a very high speed during 1900s and 1910s. The speed was over 100 MPH and gained a lot of popularity. Due to these hazards, board track became a very dangerous sport.
The crashes involved during this sport was very fatal and the riders got injured very seriously as the motorcycles flew up above the ground risking their lives. Many great racers such as Albert “Shrimp” Burns, Fred Ludlow, Gene Walker and Ralph Hepburn died due to very dangerous crashes taking their lives and their careers only last for few years.
By 1920s, this sport began to lose favor with the government and public, hence government restricted these races for the safety of the riders. In the world of American motorsports, Board track racing was considered as a glorious era. But due to the risk and hazards involved, it ended very quickly though board track motorcycles used distinct vintage style with rich racing heritage.
The efforts put forth by Sons of Speed have successfully brought these bikes from the showrooms and museums to the racing track. The venue for this event is exemplary, bikes are fantastic and the bikers are filled with enthusiasm to be the part of this great event which is anything seen in nearly a hundred years. The security and protection for this event is little better these days and can be considered as the most awaited Vintage events across the globe.
There are many participants who are risking their lives on this rigid-frame bikes that uses stock magneto ignition and does not have clutches, brakes and transmissions. Many of these bikes have already been tested by experts. Majority of the bikes are powered by Harley and the competition involves many heat races followed by the main event race.
